Sharon Thompson

I am a structuralist painter who loves pace and light. I love to create a sense of inner radiant light in a painting, so that the light seems to shine from within the painting rather than from an outside source.

This effect is created through two concerns as I paint: a process of layering the paint and a personal feel for the musical flow of space, a result of learning to play the piano and cello as a child and young adult. I begin with a base of distinctly structured shapes. I build the painting using wide brushes which I sweep across and into this structure, attentive to how each stroke adds to the overall form. I love to fit everything together and make each part connect with everything else so that everything belongs. In the end there is an immediate, visceral feeling of wholeness and completion in the paintings, arising from the juxtaposition of stillness and movement.
